Backyard Makeover Tip #1: Prioritize the seating

A backyard patio without seating is not making the best use of the space. Before you go thinking about the endless possibilities – a hammock anyone? – you have to think about what the primary goal of the seating is and choose the furniture based on its function and style. Do you like to throw a lot of parties where guests can mingle outdoors? Do you just want a space for your family to sit and enjoy each other’s company? Determine how many seats you would like to have and this will help you decide on whether you want to maximize or minimize the seating in your space.

Once you have that in mind, now you can decide on the perfect pieces to make it happen and start to build up the area based on your needs for it. Before buying outdoor furniture, however, you should consider the following:

  • How many does it seat?
  • Is it easy to clean?
  • Is it weather resistant?
  • Is it comfortable?
  • Can you move it around or will it be installed and stay in one spot?
  • Is it customizable? Can you make it your own?

Backyard Makeover Tip #2: Make sure your patio seating is conducive to socializing

Your primary focus in creating a patio seating area is to make it warm and inviting to whoever may venture out there so make it comfortable. A firepit is the perfect way to create an inviting seating area with chairs and pillows surrounding it.

If you have a smaller backyard that doesn’t offer quite enough room for a firepit, a round table creates a very similar effect.

Backyard Makeover Tip #3: Install hardscape

If your backyard does not already have sections for seating and is more of a blank canvas, now is the time to replace part of it with hardscape. Not only does it decrease the amount of maintenance that will be required for your backyard in the future, but it also helps to define the area meant for outdoor entertaining.

The crucial point here is that you find a healthy balance between the hardscape and the landscape and this may be dependent upon the type of climate you live in. In hotter climates, you may want to limit the amount of hardscape in your backyard makeover because not only will it draw in the sun, but it’s also much hotter to walk on in the blazing sun than grass.

Backyard Makeover Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to mix and match

Some of the best backyards have interesting combinations of materials used to create them. For example, in the image above, concrete and wood are paired together to form the deck and built-in seating. With the row of bamboo chutes planted behind the seating, the entire area creates somewhat of a backyard oasis that adds privacy to the home.

There are many different ways you can pull this off with a wide variety of different materials: bricks, wood, concrete, stone, hardscapes, steel, etc.

Backyard Makeover Tip #5: Create a balance between hardscape and landscape

We said in tip #2 that you want to create a healthy balance where hardscape and landscape can blend together seamlessly and exist harmoniously in the same space. Above, you have a French countryside-inspired backyard where the landscape is literally carved into the hardscape making for a very uniquely styled backyard.

Here, we have an example where the homeowner has allowed the greenery to beautifully compliment the gorgeous architecture by having the fig vines snake up the Old World-style alcove.

And finally, we have an example where the surrounding plants and trees create a secluded hideaway around the plant. The options are truly endless but the most important thing to take away from this tip is to take advantage of the unique vegetation of your own backyard and make the hardscape work in harmony with it.

Backyard Makeover Tip #6: Add drama with outdoor lighting

There are so many ways to add light to your backyard so truly you can take your pick. Whether with Moroccan lanterns or tiki torches with tealights, it will always add to the atmosphere and never detract from it. With the structure of your backyard now in place, you can simply string a variety of different light styles in the space to complete your dream backyard.
