What are the Differences Between Mortar, Cement, and Concrete?

It’s easy to confuse construction materials such as mortar, cement, and concrete. Often, people even use the words interchangeably, especially when it comes to cement and concrete. However, each material is different from the other and is used in different ways.

Cement is a binding powder. It is found in both mortar and concrete. Limestone, silica sand, clay, and shells become crushed up before being combined with other materials, including iron ore. Then, the crushed materials become heated to turn into clinker as this processed material becomes ground into a very fine powder. You combine the water with the powder to set it. You can purchase cement in dry form.

Concrete construction materials have cement in them along with gravel, sand, and other coarse aggregates. After putting in water, the cement activates and sets the other materials together and binds them into one solid object. You can purchase ready-mixed concrete as it is delivered to your home in a slurry state from a concrete machine. You can also purchase dry cement and mix in water, aggregates, sand, and gravel.

Mortar has cement and sand. It’s used to bind two other masonry objects together, such as bricks, cement blocks, and pavers. Similar to concrete and cement, mortar becomes activated when you add water. You can obtain mortar in a dry pre-mixed bag or mix the materials together on-site.

How Are They Each Used?

You normally use cement for small jobs or for waterproofing applications. Concrete works for larger projects due to its strength and durability. Mortar is weaker than both cement and concrete. It cannot be formed into a solid object. Instead, it’s used as an adhesive to bond two other objects together, such as cracks for foundation repair or between pavers for a sidewalk.

Home Improvements in Norfolk, Virginia

You can design various indoor or outdoor home projects using mortar, bricks, pavers, cement, and concrete. The projects could be as small as a concrete patio to as large as a concrete driveway. Here are some projects for your Norfolk, Virginia home.

  • Driveways
  • Patios
  • Fire pit enclosures
  • Pool surround
  • Retaining walls
  • Brick pillars
  • Stone benches
  • Kitchen islands
  • Walls
  • Archways
  • Steps
  • Front door stoops

When you have a hardscape project for your yard or a renovation inside your home, consider the convenience, durability, and strength of concrete, cement, or mortar materials. By using these materials, you can have masonry work that lasts for decades.

What Are the Different Types of Mortar?

Mortar comes in four distinct types. You or your general contractor should select the mortar that works best for the masonry project. These mortars are considered ASTM 270 and have different flexibility, elasticity, and strength.

Type N

Type N is an exterior, general-purpose mortar commonly used for above-grade walls. You can use it for masonry applications and semi-soft stone. A handyman may use it for repointing recent brickwork. Type N cures slowly and has a compressive strength of 750 psi.

Type M

Type M mortar can be used for below-grade retaining walls and foundations. It’s the strongest mortar as it has a compressive strength of 2,500 psi. You can use it for any structure that will have high lateral loads.

Type S

Type S mortar has a medium compressive strength of 1,800 psi as it can handle excessive moisture. It has better elastic and bonding properties than Type N mortar and can be used for stucco systems, below grade, and at-below exterior walls.

Type O

Type O mortar only has a compressive strength of 350 psi and is the weakest type. You would use this mortar for repointing stable walls or to set soft-stone applications such as brownstone or sandstone.
